Thai Massage vs Oil Massage:
Which to Book?

Two of the most popular massages in Bangkok, and they feel completely different. Here is how to pick the right one for your body and your trip.

The short answer

Thai massage is dry and active, oil massage is smooth and soothing. In a traditional Thai massage you stay clothed, with no oil, while your therapist works pressure points and stretches you. An oil massage uses warm oil and long, flowing strokes on your skin. Choose Thai massage if you feel stiff, oil massage if you want to unwind and sleep well.

Thai Massage vs Oil Massage: The Difference

The main difference between Thai massage and oil massage is how the body is worked. Thai massage is about pressure and movement. Oil massage is about rhythm and touch.

Traditional Thai massage is done through loose clothes, without oil. Your therapist uses her palms, thumbs, elbows and sometimes knees to press along the lines of your body, then guides you into assisted stretches: legs folded, arms pulled, back gently twisted. It is sometimes called "lazy yoga", because you do the stretching without any effort.

Oil massage is done on the skin with warm oil. The strokes are long and gliding, working along the back, legs, arms and shoulders. The pressure can be light or firm, but the overall feeling is smooth and continuous, with no stretching.

Neither one is "better". They simply do different jobs, and nothing stops you from trying one early in your trip and the other a few days later.

Is Thai Massage Done with Oil?

No. Traditional Thai massage is a dry massage: no oil, no lotion, and you keep your clothes on. That is what makes the stretching possible, because your therapist needs grip to hold and move your arms and legs.

You will sometimes see "Thai oil massage" on menus in Bangkok. That usually means an oil massage given by a Thai therapist, sometimes with a few Thai pressure techniques mixed in. If you want both styles in one session, choose a combined treatment rather than guessing from the name.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose Thai massage

You feel stiff from walking, sitting or training, you like firm pressure, and you want to feel looser and more energised afterwards.

Choose oil massage

You just landed, you are tired or stressed, you want to sleep well tonight, or you simply prefer a gentle, soothing touch.

Choose both

Our 2-hour Special Massage Thai & Oil starts with Thai stretching, then moves into a full oil massage.

Many people find Thai massage works best during an active trip, and oil massage works best after a long flight or a heavy work week. If what you really want is firm, focused work on knots, compare Thai massage vs deep tissue too.

Still undecided? Think about how you want to feel when the massage ends. If you want to go out for dinner feeling light and loose, Thai massage is the better fit. If you want to fall asleep the moment your therapist leaves, book an oil massage.

Both can be adjusted to you. Say "softer" or "stronger" at any time and she will change the pressure. If you have a sore spot, an old injury or an area you would rather she avoided, mention it before she starts.

Thai vs Aroma Oil Massage, and Other Oils

"Oil massage" covers a small family of treatments. The technique is similar, the oil and the mood change.

  • Classic oil massage. Warm oil, long flowing strokes, pressure adjusted to you. A good all-round choice.
  • Aromatherapy massage. Essential oils and a gentle, slow touch. The calmest option, offered in 90 or 120 minutes.
  • Coconut oil massage. A light, natural oil that leaves your skin soft. Lovely after a day in the sun.
  • Natural cream massage. A cream instead of oil, for those who prefer a less oily feel. Offered in 90 or 120 minutes.

So when you compare Thai massage vs aroma oil massage, you are comparing the two ends of the scale: active and firm on one side, slow and fragrant on the other.

How Long to Book: 60, 90 or 120 Minutes

  • 60 minutes. Enough for a focused session on your back, neck and shoulders, or a quick full-body oil massage.
  • 90 minutes. The comfortable middle. A full Thai massage with time for the stretches, or an unhurried oil massage. A good choice for a first time.
  • 120 minutes. For a full reset: every muscle group, slowly. Ideal after a long flight, and the length of our Thai & Oil Special Massage.

Thai massage gains a lot from extra time, because the stretches need a slow pace. Oil massage is relaxing even in an hour, but 90 minutes lets you sink into it fully. Our massages start from 900 THB, paid in cash after your session.

Oil Massage in Bangkok, in Your Room

With an outcall massage, your therapist comes to your hotel, condo, serviced apartment or Airbnb, usually in about 30 minutes. She brings massage oils and fresh sheets, and the massage is usually done on your bed. You only need a towel and about 2 × 2 m of space.

For a Thai massage, put on loose clothes. For an oil massage, keep a towel ready. You choose your therapist from real photos, book in English on WhatsApp or LINE, and pay in cash after the massage, with no deposit and no booking fee.

A quick health note: if you are pregnant, have an injury, a fever, recent surgery or a history of blood clots, check with your doctor first, whichever massage you choose.
