Massage Scams in Bangkok
and How to Book Safely

Most massages in Bangkok are honest and good value. A few simple checks help you avoid the rare place that is not.

The short answer

Yes, massage in Bangkok is safe for most visitors. Massage scams in Bangkok are uncommon, and they almost always follow the same patterns: a price that changes after the massage, a deposit asked before anyone arrives, or photos that do not match the person who comes. Agree the price in writing, pay in cash after the massage, and never send a deposit. That is how a safe outcall massage works.

Is Massage in Bangkok Safe?

Thai massage is part of everyday life in Bangkok. Locals, expats and travellers book massages every day, in small shops, spas, hotel spas and in their own rooms, and the vast majority go exactly as planned.

Like in any big tourist city, a small number of places try to take advantage of visitors who do not know the usual prices or the usual way things are done. The good news is that a Bangkok massage scam is easy to spot once you know what to look for. This guide explains the common traps in plain terms, so you can relax and enjoy your massage.

Common Massage Scams in Bangkok

These are the situations travellers report most often. None of them is typical, but each one is worth knowing.

  • The price changes after the massage. You agreed on one amount, then at the end you are told it was "per person", "per hour" or "without oil", and the bill is higher.
  • Hidden extras and upsells. Oil, a hot compress, a "special balm" or a longer session is added during the massage without a clear price, then charged at the end.
  • A shorter session than you paid for. You paid for 60 minutes and the massage finishes after 40.
  • A deposit before anyone arrives. An online ad asks you to pay an advance, a "booking fee" or a "transport fee" by bank transfer or QR code. Then nobody comes, or a second payment is requested.
  • Photos that do not match. The therapist in the ad is not the one who arrives, or the photos were clearly taken from somewhere else.
  • A tip demanded up front. You are asked for a tip before the massage starts, or told the tip is "required".
  • Street touts. Someone on the street offers a very cheap price and walks you to a shop, where the real menu is different.

Red Flags vs Green Flags

A trustworthy massage service, whether it is a shop, a spa or an in-room service, behaves in a predictable way. Use this table as a quick check before you book.

Red flagWhat a trustworthy service does
PriceVague, "we talk later", or changes at the endShows a menu and confirms the total before the massage
PaymentDeposit or transfer before anyone arrivesYou pay after the massage, no deposit
PhotosPolished pictures that look copiedReal photos of the therapist who will come
Session lengthEnds early, no clock in sightGives you the full time you paid for
ExtrasAdded during the massage, charged afterAsks first and tells you the price
TipsAsked for before the massage, or "required"Optional, only if you enjoyed it
How you find themA stranger on the street leads you thereReviews from real guests you can read first

One red flag is not proof of a scam, but two or three together are a good reason to walk away or book somewhere else.

How to Book a Safe In-Room Massage

An in-room massage at your hotel, condo or Airbnb is one of the most comfortable ways to enjoy a massage in Bangkok, and it is easy to book safely. Before you confirm, check these points.

  • Real photos. You should be able to choose your therapist from real photos, not a single stock picture.
  • The price in writing. Ask for the massage, the length and the total price in the chat before she leaves. A written message is easy to show later if there is any doubt.
  • Cash after the massage. Pay when the massage is finished, not before. Keep a few smaller notes so you do not need change.
  • No deposit. A genuine in-room service does not need your money before it arrives. If a deposit is the only way to book, book elsewhere.
  • A clear area and arrival time. The service should tell you which areas it covers and roughly how long the therapist will take to arrive.
  • Reviews from real bookings. Read what previous guests wrote, ideally reviews collected after a confirmed booking rather than anonymous comments.

This is how Paya Massage works. You choose your therapist from real photos on our homepage, book in English on WhatsApp or LINE, and pay in cash after your massage. There is no deposit and no booking fee, and our massage prices are published online, starting from 900 THB. Our guest reviews come from the review link we send after each massage. Some hotels ask visitors to register at reception: our guide to in-room massage in Bangkok hotels explains what to expect.

Simple Habits That Protect You

Before

Confirm the massage, the length and the total price in writing. Never send a deposit or a "transport fee" in advance.

During

If anything extra is offered, ask the price first. You can always say no, politely, and continue with what you booked.

After

Pay the agreed amount in cash. A tip is your choice, never a condition, and only if you enjoyed it.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

Most problems are simple misunderstandings and can be solved calmly. If something does not feel right, these steps help.

  • Do not pay more than agreed. Stay calm and polite, show the price you agreed in the chat, and pay that amount only.
  • Keep the chat. Do not delete your messages. Take screenshots of the price, the photos and the booking details.
  • Contact the company. A genuine business wants to hear about a problem and fix it. If it stops replying, that tells you something too.
  • Call the Tourist Police on 1155. This is the Thailand Tourist Police hotline for visitors, and English is spoken. In a hotel, the front desk can also help you.

Never send more money to "unlock" a booking or get a deposit back. A second payment request is a clear sign to stop the conversation.
