Is In-Room Massage Allowed
in Bangkok Hotels?

What hotels, condos and Airbnbs usually ask, how to prepare your room, and how to book a massage to your door.

The short answer

Yes, in most Bangkok hotels. Booking a massage therapist to your room is common in Bangkok and most hotels are used to it. Some ask visitors to register at reception, and condos may need you to meet your therapist in the lobby. Below is what to expect, place by place.

What Hotel Reception May Ask

Bangkok hotels take guest safety seriously, so many of them keep track of who goes up to the rooms. When your therapist arrives, the front desk may:

  • ask her to leave an ID card at reception while she is upstairs;
  • call your room to check that you are expecting a visitor;
  • write down her name and the time she goes up.

This is routine and takes a minute. The easiest way to avoid any wait is to tell the front desk in advance: "A massage therapist is coming to my room at 9 pm."

A few hotels have stricter visitor rules. If you are not sure about yours, ask reception before you book, or send us the hotel name and we will tell you what we know.

Condos, Serviced Apartments & Airbnbs

Residential buildings work a little differently from hotels:

  • Key-card lifts: in many condos the lift only works with a resident's card, so you may need to come down and meet your therapist in the lobby.
  • Security desk: the guard may ask for your unit number or call you. Send us the exact building name and unit number when you book.
  • Airbnb: follow the building rules your host gave you. Meeting your therapist at the entrance is usually the simplest.

How to Prepare Your Room

Space

A little free space, about 2 × 2 m, is enough. The massage is usually done on the bed.

Towel & shower

Keep a towel ready. A quick shower before the massage is appreciated, especially after a hot day out.

Comfort

Set the air-conditioning to a comfortable temperature and dim the lights. Your therapist brings oils and fresh sheets.

Good Etiquette

  • Be ready on time: your therapist has often crossed Bangkok traffic to reach you.
  • Tell her about any injury, pain or pressure preference before she starts.
  • Tipping is appreciated but never required; 200 to 500 THB is a kind gesture if you enjoyed it.

In-Room Massage FAQ

Joiner fees are meant for guests who stay overnight. A therapist visiting for a massage is a visitor, but policies differ, so ask the front desk if you are unsure.

In a hotel, usually not: reception sends your therapist up. In condos and serviced apartments where the lift needs a key card, you may need to meet her in the lobby.

A towel and a little free space, about 2 × 2 m. Your therapist brings the massage oils and fresh sheets.
