Massage After a Long Flight
to Ease Jet Lag in Bangkok

Ten or more hours in a seat leaves you stiff, heavy-legged and wide awake at the wrong time. Here is how to use a massage to start your Bangkok trip feeling human again.

The short answer

A massage after a long flight is one of the nicest ways to start your trip. Book an oil or aromatherapy massage if you mainly want to relax and sleep, or a Thai massage if you feel stiff all over. With an in-room hotel massage you can message us as soon as you land, shower when you arrive, and go straight to bed afterwards. If one calf is painful or swollen, skip the massage and see a doctor first.

Why a Massage After a Long Flight Feels So Good

A long-haul flight asks a lot of your body. You sit for hours in the same position, your legs barely move, your neck bends as you try to sleep upright, and the cabin air is dry. By the time you reach Bangkok, your back feels tight, your ankles may look a little puffy and your legs feel heavy.

A massage after a flight gets everything moving again, gently and without effort from you. Many travellers find it eases the stiffness from the seat, makes their legs feel lighter and, just as important, helps them relax enough to fall asleep at the right time. That is why a massage after an international flight makes such a good first-night ritual in Bangkok.

Which Massage to Choose When You Land

The best massage after a flight depends on what you need most tonight: sleep, or getting the stiffness out.

Oil massage

Warm oil and long, flowing strokes. The easiest choice if you want to relax and sleep. See our oil massage.

Aromatherapy

Gentle pressure with essential oils, in 90 or 120 minutes. Ideal for a late arrival when you just want to drift off. See our aromatherapy massage.

Traditional Thai

No oil, acupressure and assisted stretching. Best if you feel stiff all over, and it can feel energising, so it suits a daytime arrival.

Cannot decide? The Special Massage (Thai & Oil) is a two-hour session that starts with Thai stretching and finishes with a full oil massage. For a closer look at the two main styles, read our guide to Thai massage vs oil massage.

When to Book Your First Massage

The simplest plan is to book from the taxi or as soon as you reach your hotel. Message us on WhatsApp or LINE with your hotel or condo, your room number and the time you want. Your therapist is usually at your door in about 30 minutes, so you have time to check in and shower first.

Paya Massage is open 24/7, every day, so a 2 a.m. landing is not a problem. Our 24-hour massage in Bangkok is built for exactly this: late flights, early flights and body clocks that are somewhere over the ocean.

  • Take a warm shower first: it starts the relaxing and leaves your skin fresh for oil.
  • Drink a glass or two of water before and after. Planes are dry.
  • Have a light snack rather than a heavy meal just before.
  • Withdraw some Thai Baht at the airport: you pay in cash after the massage.

Some hotels ask visitors to register at reception, and condos with key-card lifts may need you to meet your therapist in the lobby. Our guide to in-room massage in Bangkok hotels covers what to expect.

Your First Evening: Resetting Your Sleep

A massage cannot change your body clock on its own, but it can help you wind down at the right moment. These are general habits many travellers use to settle into Bangkok time. Everyone reacts differently, so take them as simple ideas, not medical advice.

A simple planWhen to have your massage
Morning arrivalGet outside in daylight, eat a light lunch, keep any nap shortEarly evening, then bed at local bedtime
Afternoon arrivalA short walk, an early light dinner, no long napEvening, an hour or two before bed
Evening arrivalCheck in, shower, light mealStraight away, then sleep
Late night arrivalShower and a glass of waterAs soon as you reach your room

Go easy on alcohol and coffee on the first evening, and resist a long nap in the afternoon, even if the bed looks tempting. If you wake up in the middle of the night, keep the lights low and try to stay in bed until morning.

Ask for Extra Leg Work

After a flight, your legs usually need the most attention. Tell your therapist at the start that you have just landed, and ask her to spend extra time on your calves, feet and thighs, then your lower back and neck.

  • Ask for light to medium pressure on the legs: after a flight, gentle is often more comfortable than strong.
  • Mention any area that feels sore or tender before she starts.
  • Choose 90 minutes if you can: enough for focused leg work and a full-body massage.
  • A pillow under your ankles when lying on your back can feel good after hours of sitting.

Prefer stronger work on a tight neck from sleeping upright? A traditional Thai massage or deep tissue is better for that, ideally a day or two after you arrive.

A Word on Blood Clots

Long flights carry a small risk of a blood clot in the leg, called deep vein thrombosis or DVT. It is uncommon, but it matters, because massaging a leg with a clot is not safe.

  • Do not book a leg massage if one calf or leg is painful, swollen, warm or red, especially on one side only. See a doctor first.
  • Chest pain or sudden shortness of breath after a flight is an emergency: get medical help straight away.
  • If you have had blood clots before, take medication that thins your blood, are pregnant or have had recent surgery, check with your doctor before any massage.

Ordinary tiredness, heavy legs and slightly puffy ankles on both sides are common after flying. If anything feels different from that, play it safe and ask a doctor before booking.

How It Works in Your Room

Your therapist brings massage oils and fresh sheets. You only need a towel and about 2 by 2 metres of space: the massage is usually done on the bed, so you can fall asleep the moment she leaves. You choose your therapist from real photos on our homepage before you book.

Prices start from 900 THB, paid in cash after your massage, with no deposit and no booking fee. Transport is included in central areas such as Sukhumvit, Silom and Sathorn; further out, a small transport fee may apply.
